Musicolor – A Melodious Experience


The golden era of hindi film music is eternal and the music of the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s magical. Decades have passed, generations have changed, several legends of the music world have bid adieu, technology has advanced by leaps and bounds from the humble gramophone record to the flashy ipod… but one thing that has remained static and unfazed is the undying passion of music lovers for the evergreen classics and immortal gems of yore. This is precisely where mumbai based music troupe Musicolor come into the spotlight. The band has carved a niche for itself by staging theme based music concerts in an effort to revive the golden period of hindi film music. “The songs we present are several decades old but the impact is tremendous. The instant reaction of the audience is extremely gratifying. We consider ourselves very fortunate that we are able to present these eternal compositions live on stage. For many in the audience it’s a flashback to those good old days which rekindles fond memories”, elucidates singer Sarita Rajesh, winner of seven consecutive episodes of Zee TV’s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, and the initiator of Musicolor that enlivens the audience with their spirited performance presenting immortal melodies of the bygone era. In the last one year the band has organised immensely successful theme based programmes like ‘Mohammed Rafi – The Legend’, ‘Anmol Rattan – Hits of Naushad & Madan Mohan’, ‘ Dil Dhoondta Hai – All time hits of Gulzar’, ‘ Teen Deviyan – Greatest hits of Nargis, Madhubala & Nutan’, ‘Immortal gems of Mukesh’, ‘ Evergreen hits of Dev Anand’ and ‘Hits of Rajesh Khanna’. Avid music lover and Bandra resident Roshan Godrej fondly recollects Musicolor’s maiden show held to commemorate the death anniversary of legendary singer Mukesh. “ The programme held at the ISCKON auditorium Juhu featured an ensemble of timeless gems of Mukeshji like Suhana safar, Dil tadap tadap, Jhoom jhoom ke nacho aaj, Zindagi khwab hai, Woh subah kabhie to aayegi, Yeh mera diwanapan, Dil ki nazar se, Bhooli hui yaadein, Aa laut ke aaja, Aa ab laut chale and Sawan ka mahina. It was an awesome experience. Apart from being melodious these songs have a nostalgic element in them “, she quips. Musicolor boasts of a team of immensely talented singers like Sarita Rajesh, Srikant Narayan, Gaurav Bangia, Vrushali Patil, Anand Bahal, Sagar Savarkar, Archana Gore, Viren Bilicia and renowned musicians like Praveen Pathak, Nilesh Devasthali, Milind Dabholkar (Synthesizer), Deepak Borkar (Percussion), Vijay Tambe (Flute), Vasu Mathre (Congo/Dholak), Umashankar Shukla (Sitar), Sushil Gangavane (Tabla), Nandkishore (Saxophone), Amit Pujjar (Base Guitar), Vijay Jadhav (Octopad) and lead guitarist and music arranger Ajay Madan who recreate the magic on stage after rigorous rehearsals.

Musicolor was formed with the vision to professionally undertake and skillfully manage various kinds of musical events. On the corporate front Musicolor has performed music shows for Union Bank Of India, Galaxy Surfactants Pvt Ltd, Glaxosmithkline, State Bank of India, Oriental Bank of Commerce among others. “In this age of cacophony and mindless technical jugglery the simple soothing melodies of the black and white era comes as a blessing in disguise for scores of music lovers. Musicolor has truly revived the gems and their shows are a melodious experience”, points Kandivili resident Gopal Sura. Another significant aspect about Musicolor is that it has had the privilege of bringing on stage legendary saxophone player and music director Manohari Singh. “He gives smashing performance in songs like ‘Gulabi ankhen’, ‘Roop tera mastana’, ‘Yeh jo mohabbat hai’, ‘Tere mere sapne’, ‘Hai duniya usi ki’ and gets a standing ovation each time he performs. He is a sheer delight and a livewire on stage”, mentions music arranger Ajay Madan.

According to Rajesh Subramanian, the creative head of the group, “Musicolor’s vision rests on three tenets – creativity, synergy and quality. Our aim is to enthrall the audience with melodious music”. With an unflinching passion for spreading mellifluous music, a professional outlook and determination to forge ahead Musicolor is sure to set the stage on fire in the coming years with many more melodious events.
